Medieval Swordplay
Basics & Safety Course
This 12 Week historical fencing course will teach you the fundamentals of sword fighting from medieval Europe. It is developed off the basics of the single handed Messer used in Europe during the 15th century.
No prior martial experience is necessary, all are welcome! This is a great opportunity to learn how to fight realistically and historically with swords. Our way of training mind, body, and skill will help you get into shape. The sword classes combined with BashFit! is a great way to have all your workout in one place. |
The Basics & Safety Course teaches the basic footwork, cuts, distances and terms used in the German tradition and will set the groundwork for approaching the other weapons. While the main system in this course is Messer, you will be working with the other systems such as longsword, spear, and even sword and buckler! This course is only open to 16 years and above. Our youth class, Rook, is for 13 to 16 years old.
You don't need to have any martial experience to begin! We will cover everything starting from simple footwork! Our goal is to have you safely sparring with swords towards the end of the course! All safety and training equipment will be provided during the session. |
Bastion runs 4 Basics & Safety Course intakes throughout the year. The course duration is 12 weeks.
The curriculum is arranged in a weekly format, and we have multiple Basics & Safety lessons per week. This allows people with a flexible schedule to attend each week without missing out on lesson content. The lessons takes place at Tailee Building #05-04, 39 Jalan Pemimpin, 577182. We are only 5 mins walk from Marymount MRT Exit B! For more details on how to get here, you can head over to our Location page. |
"I thought it was a pretty geeky sport, didn't realize how much muscle and stamina you need for swordfighting! After coming to Bastion, I have defined biceps now, which attests to how strength-building swordfighting is. It's not a geeky sport, it's BADASS. And a very cool skill to have! It's a nice way to socialize, I build strength while swordfighting, and I get to take photos of me wielding pretty cool swords."

"Before coming to Bastion, I thought that swordfighting was complex and difficult to learn. Now, it's still very complex but learning it is actually not as hard as I thought, though pulling off the moves take more skill than previously thought. I have gotten a good understanding of how weapons are used, a great workout, and it is great fun in general."
