Historical Fencing Academy

Codex. Combat. Community.

At Bastion, we bring history off the page and into your hands through Historical European Martial Arts.

The heart of our study is the late medieval period with a particular focus on the earlier Liechtenauer tradition and the Augsburg tradition.

Our founders trained and taught at the Glamorgan School of Arms in Wales under Dirk Neumann; Bastion's lead instructor holds the BFHS IL1 Coaching Certificate from the British Federation for Historical Swordplay

Come learn directly from the manuscripts and turn historical study into living martial practice.

Weekly classes work through longsword, messer, sword & buckler, spear, and dagger, drawn from Liechtenauer's gloss, Lecküchner, and the Augsburg fechtbücher, on a structured rotation by grade.

Manuscript study sessions on subjects like Ringeck, Danzig, Lew, Ott Jud, Lecküchner, and I.33

Bashfit conditioning programme designed for beginners

Learning Messerfechten: The Augsburg Messer Tradition (Now Available!)

Our Principal Instructor, Lucien Lee, presents a clear and practical introduction to the Augsburg messer tradition.

The book is richly illustrated with over 100 images, guiding readers step by step. Beyond technique, dedicated chapters on sumptuary law, fashion, and civic duty reveal why the messer was more than a weapon and a symbol of its time.

Written for both students and instructors, wherever they train, this work also welcomes the curious reader seeking to understand the cultural and martial significance of the messer.
