Our home in Wales
The Glamorgan School of Arms is the sister school of Bastion.
The Glamorgan School of Arms was founded by Dirk Neumann in 2004. We are a Swansea based Western Martial Arts group, studying in the main techniques for long-handled and single-handed sword combat used in the period from the 13th and 16th Centuries. The club has seen many changes but has always maintained its foundation of respect and integrity. The schools core syllabus consists of four main weapons Langes Messer, Sword and Buckler, Longsword, and the Fighting Cane.
Lucien L and Langley Q trained and taught at Glamorgan School of Arms from 2012 to 2016. While they have since moved on to found Bastion in Singapore, GSA will always be their first home.
Head Instructor - Dirk Neumann
Dirk founded the school in 2004 and has been teaching Historical Martial arts since 2001. He has also taught horse archery. With patience and understanding plus the occasional corrective knock to the side of the head he has taken several students through the process of becoming instructors in their own right. Outside HEMA he supports various charities by completing 100k walks, such as completing the 100k walk for blind veterans.
Instructor - Chris Newham
Chris has sport fenced at county level and has been studying Martial Arts for over 25 years. Starting HEMA with the Georgian small-sword he joined GSA in 2012. Studying under Head Instructor Dirk Neumann he completed his instructor certification in 2016, since then he has gone on to develop the school's Cane disciplines as well as running the regular Friday evening classes.
BFHS IL1 Coaching Certificate
It was under the guidance of Head Instructor Dirk Neumann that Lucien Lee and Chris Newham was able to acquire the IL1 coaching certificate from the British Federation for Historical Swordplay in September 2016. This achievement came after years of fencing and instructor's training under Dirk, followed by months of preparation for the formal assessment.
